I just got back from Indy 4. I went in KOTCS with low expectations. Radiers of the Lost Ark is my all time favorite movie and I HATE Last Crusade so I'm used to there being some wide berth in the quality of these movies.
So, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. You know how when your Grandma starts getting really old and the cookies and X-mas dinner she once made so well are no longer enjoyable meals and the cookies are dry and tasteless? Well, that's Indy 4. You're at Grandma's house and you really want to like the food and you love your Grandma so much, but when you're really honest with yourself the food is just not that good and Grandma kinda smells like pee.
The first hour has some fun stuff in it. It looked and felt like a B-movie from the 50's. There were even a few bright spots of Harrison Ford really inhabiting the character like he did back in Raiders, but those were to few. Still, this time Indy was back to being a bright and sometimes dangerous man unlike the buffoon they made him into in Last Crusade. There are numerous mentions of Indy being a teacher in this movie. I guess that's to set up why Indy is so full of exposition this time around.
I wanted to like this flick. I really did. I'd give my left nut to read Frank Darabont's script that Spielberg and Ford raved about. I've heard that the first part of the film, the part that worked the best, was the one leftover from Darabont's script. I have to go back tomorrow as I promised to take my son after school. Maybe I'll just take him to Iron Man instead. Better yet, maybe we'll just stay home and watch Raiders.

I was cured all right.
Dammit, I wanted KOTCS to be great.
Oh and the numerous mentions of him being a teacher is to rub it into our minds that he is teaching Mutt, who would be carrying on the Indy torch...and if you don't think that is going to happen at least two more times, you are on crack. this is Lucas we are talking about...King of the trilogy's.
I agree, I WISH they could have overtaken Lucas and gone with Frank's script. I don't think we would have had this feeling if they had.

For the most part, I liked it. There are a few low points, but a decent film none the less.
Its diffecult seeing some of the characters in their older age after watching the earlier films and having this image about what they looked like before.
The film suffers for so many people, from years of build up in peoples minds about how it should have been.
As for Cats statement about Lucas and the king of trilogys, I don't think that this will suffer any sequal fates.
